Implementation of Intellectual Property Measures in South East Asia
We assisted the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) in the implementation of two flagship Intellectual Property (IP) programmes in Southeast Asia: IP Key South-East Asia and ARISE+ IPR. These two initiatives aimed at improving intellectual property protection and enforcement across the ASEAN region.
IP Key SEA focused on:
- Promoting EU standards for IP legislation and enforcement
- Safeguarding the interests of European right holders and investors
- Enhancing transparency and discouraging the misuse of IP laws as trade barriers
- Raising public and institutional awareness about the importance of IPR
ARISE+ IPR, in parallel, supported:
- Stronger and more efficient ASEAN IP offices, offering accessible trademark and design services
- Greater alignment with international treaties and global IP systems
- Improved local capacities in Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar, encouraging innovation and enforcement of IP rights
- Awareness campaigns and training for the productive sector and civil society
Key activities included:
- Support to FTA negotiations and IP dialogues
- Training sessions and seminars on trademarks, GIs, enforcement and cybercrime
- Coordination of events like IP Week and stakeholder roundtables
- Support to project implementation teams in Alicante and Bangkok
This intervention contributed to creating fairer conditions for EU-ASEAN trade while boosting regional innovation and IP protection.
