Economic and Tourism Potential for the Development of the Prespa/Prespes Lakes Area

This feasibility study focused on identifying opportunities for sustainable economic development in the Prespa/Prespes Lakes area, a unique transboundary region shared by North Macedonia, Albania and Greece. The study aimed to balance economic potential with environmental protection, considering the region’s rich natural and cultural resources.

The study undertook a comprehensive review of existing policies and regulations, assessing economic conditions and development frameworks across sectors such as tourism, agriculture, rural development, infrastructure, and environmental protection.

The final output outlined viable strategies for long-term growth. Key areas of analysis included:

  • Infrastructure gaps and investment needs at the municipal level
  • Opportunities in eco-tourism and cultural heritage promotion
  • Support needs for local SMEs
  • Cross-border cooperation potential
  • Environmental constraints and sustainability guidelines
