SADC Regional Quality Award ceremony held in Kinshasa

Kinshasa DRC was the venue of the 2015 SADC Annual Quality Awards presentation ceremony presided over by the Director General of the Office Congolais de Control (OCC), Dr Albert Kasongo Mukonzo, and graced by the presence of his Excellency he Zimbabwean Ambassador to the DRC, Mr Raphael T. Faranisi.

The ceremony was held on 18 March 2015 at the Fleuve, Kempinski Hotel in Kinshasa and was attended by over 100 local and regional delegates as well as international guests who were in Kinshasa attending the SADC Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Technical Cooperation Structures’ annual meetings.

The SADC Annual Quality Awards competition is held at two levels. Member States are expected to run a national level competition, winners of which are eligible to enter the regional level competition.

There are nine categories of competition as follows:

  • Category 1: Company/Organisation of the year, Large Enterprise.
  • Category 1: Company/Organisation of the year, Small and Medium Enterprise
  • Category 2: Product of the year, Large Enterprise
  • Category 2: Product of the year, Small and Medium Enterprise
  • Category 3: Service of the year, Large enterprise
  • Category 3: service of the year, Small and Medium Enterprise
  • Category 4: Exporter of the year, Large Enterprise
  • Category 4: Exporter of the year, Small and Medium Enterprise
  • Category 5: Individual Award

Fourteen entries from 3 SADC Member States were received for the regional competition this year and three winners were selected for awards in four categories. One of the winners received two awards, the first time this has happened in the history of the competition.

In her remarks at the gala dinner during which the awards were presented, the Senior Programme Officer – TBT, Dr Elsie Meintjies, encouraged more Member States to organize quality award competitions and more enterprises to participate. The SADC Quality Award competition is one of the ways in which SADC promotes the use of standards and quality tools by both the public and the productive sectors.

  • Large enterprise of the year – Etosha Fishing Corporation, Namibia;
  • Small and Medium scale enterprise of the year – Nutriconsult LDA, Mozambique;
  • Product of the year, large enterprise – Schweppes Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe; and
  • Exporter of the year, large enterprise – Etosha Fishing Corporation, Namibia.
