SADC Annual Quality Award 2014

The fourth SADC Annual Quality Awards presentation ceremony was held on the evening of the March 19, 2014 at the Grandpalm Hotel in Gaborone, Botswana.

The aim of the SADC Annual Quality Award competition is to recognize and appreciate organizations and individuals who are contributing to quality advancement in all sectors of industry by having measurement and quality systems, procedures and processes that are in line with local, regional and international best practices. The SADC Annual Quality Awards Procedure was approved by the SADC Committee of Ministers of Trade (CMT) in 2009 and its implementation started in 2011.

The Awards Presentation Ceremony was graced with the presence of SADC Executive Secretary Dr Stergomena Lawrence Tax. In her speech she indicated that the SADC Annual Quality Awards provides SADC with a platform and an opportunity to encourage local industries to be aware of quality issues, cognisant of the fact that success of our services and products in local markets due to excellent quality and reasonable price translate to guaranteed success in regional and international markets.

The Award is divided into the following categories:

  • Category 1: Company of the year (Large Enterprise, Small and Medium Enterprise)
  • Category 2: Product of the year (Large Enterprise, Small and Medium Enterprise)
  • Category 3: Service of the year (Large enterprise, Small and Medium Enterprise)
  • Category 4: Exporter of the year (Large Enterprise, Small and Medium Enterprise)
  • Category 5: Individual Award

For the year 2013/2014, entries from sixteen enterprises and two individuals were received, all from six SADC Member states. The participating Member States included Angola, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe.

The winning companies in 2013/2014 competition are:

  • FUNAE Fundo de Energia, a company from Mozambique is a winner in the large enterprise company of the year category.
  • Integrated Properties a company from Zimbabwe claiming the prize in the small and medium enterprise company of the year category.
  • Hangana Seafood a company from Namibia won in the large enterprise product of the year category.
  • The Avenues Clinic a company from Zimbabwe won in the large enterprise service of the year category.
  • Meatco Namibia a company from Namibia won in the exporter of the year category.

The competition increases awareness on the importance of a quality culture, use of international standards and interest in quality management because of their contribution to product competitiveness.

A commendable increase in the number of enterprises and Member States participating has been noted. All Member States are encouraged to mobilise participation of more private and public sector in the SADC Annual Quality Awards.
